Battle of the Books

What is it?
Battle of the Books is a reading competition between teams of students who have read all the required novels. Teams get to choose their t-shirt color and team name. During the battle each team has to answer questions about the books and authors. Teams earn points for every correct answer. The team with the most points at the end of the rounds wins.

Who can participate? Any fifth grade student at Nashville Elementary School may participate.

What do I have to do? Each participant must read all 12 novels, complete a question sheet for each book and take an AR Quiz passing with at least 80%.

How do I get started? Talk with your parents about it. If you are interested, fill out the detachable side, cut it off and turn it into Mrs. Billups in the media center by the specified deadline.

Where do I find the books? NES has all of the novels in the media center reserved in a special section for Battle of the Books Participants. You may also check out books from Harold D. Cooley Library and Braswell Memorial Library.

Philosophy

The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students in the fifth grade at NES. Students, regardless of ability are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.
