Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Winifred Gaynor wbgaynor@ncpschools.net
In July of 2009, the State Board of Education adopted Academically or Intellectually Gifted Program Standards for North Carolina. These Standards encompass six principle standards: Student Identification, Curriculum, Professional Development, Programming, Partnerships, and Accountability. These standards articulate the expectations for quality, comprehensive, and effective local AIG programs. The Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System’s Academically or Intellectually Gifted Education Program is a part of a continuum of services that promotes and supports the academic achievement of all students while emphasizing appropriate educational opportunities for the academically or intellectually gifted child. We believe that students from all cultural and socioeconomic populations can exhibit exceptional abilities and are committed to providing an appropriately differentiated instructional program responsive to the abilities and needs of all gifted learners to prepare them to be globally competitive in the 21st Century.

All students in grades 1 and 2 will be involved in Convergent Thinking Activities that focused on deductive and analytical thinking skills.  These lessons are part of A.I.M.s (Activating Inquisitive Minds), a program being implemented in all elementary schools by the AIG Department.

Students in grades 3-5 who have been identified as gifted are served in several ways. Classroom teachers in Reading and Math will be receiving in-service training to address the needs of academically gifted students they teach. These students also meet with the AIG Facilitator on a weekly basis for further differentiated instruction.

We are excited about working with your child in this AIG program!
